Wrongful Death -Toxic Mold

Did you know?

1 in 5 Americans suffer from allergic rhinitis, the most common chronic disease in humans.

Toxic mold exposure can cause serious health conditions. While not all types of mold are dangerous when humans are exposed, toxic mold can be fatal if babies are exposed to it. Many people do not realize they are being exposed to toxic mold because symptoms of toxic mold exposure may appear like a common cold or allergies. Individuals with an especially decreased immune system when exposed to toxic mold can suffer heightened health complications.

Toxic mold develops in overly damp conditions. Certain areas are more likely to have toxic mold, including areas of high rain and high humidity that fosters the growth of toxic mold. Prolonged toxic mold exposure can be extremely detrimental depending on the concentration of toxic mold present.

Who is affected by exposure to mold?

There is a wide variability in how people are affected by mold exposure. People who may be affected more severely and quickly than others include:

  • Infants and children
  • Elderly people
  • Pregnant women
  • Individuals with respiratory conditions or allergies and asthma
  • Persons with weakened immune systems (for example, chemotherapy patients, organ or bone marrow transplant recipients, and people with HIV infections or autoimmune diseases)

When Toxic Mold begins to dry, the toxic spores produce to carry out the next generation of toxic mold, which is poisonous to human bodies. If a location becomes infected with toxic mold there is constant toxic mold threat and no one should live, work in, or occupy that area.

Possible Signs of Toxic Mold

  • Respiratory problems---wheezing, difficulty in breathing
  • Nasal and sinus congestion
  • Eyes-burning, watery, reddened, blurry vision, light sensitivity
  • Dry, hacking cough
  • Sore throat
  • Nose and throat irritation
  • Shortness of breath and lung disease
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Skin irritation
  • Central nervous system problems (constant headaches, loss of memory, and mood changes)
  • Aches and pains
  • Fever
  • Headaches
  • Diarrhea
  • Immune suppression

The ill effects of molds generally break down into 4 categories that include allergies, infections, irritations, and toxicities. Allergies are probably the most common reaction to contact with molds. The reactions can run the spectrum, from very mild and temporary reactions to acute, chronic illness. According to The Institute of Medicine :

  • 1 in 5 Americans suffer from allergic rhinitis, the most common chronic disease in humans.
  • 1 in 9 Americans suffer from allergy-related sinusitis.
  • 1 in 10 Americans have allergic-related asthma.
  • 1 in 11 Americans experience allergic dermatitis.
  • Less than 1 in 100 Americans suffer from serious chronic allergic diseases.

A few examples of fungi/mold species that can be hazardous to the health of humans include:

  • Penicillium
  • Aspergillus
  • Stachybotrys
  • Paecilomyces
  • Fusarium
  • Cladosporium
  • Alternaria

It is estimated that there are greater than 100,000 different species of fungi that exist across the world. These thinly spun threaded organisms produce spores that then allow them to spread themselves to different locations. Spores can be spread in the air, through water, or even among insects.

Is mold exposure bad for humans?

Toxic mold exposure can be dangerous and even fatal for susceptible individuals. However, the majority of molds pose little or no health risks to humans. Household molds exist in colors such as red, green, blue-green, brown and black.  In fact, there are only two types of household molds that are toxic--- Stachybotrys and Memnoniella .
